Condition grades

New, cargo-worthy or wind and watertight?

In container trading, the condition grade determines price and suitability. Here is what the terms mean and what each grade is good for, so that you can actually compare offers.

Most recommended

New / one-trip

Factory new, at most one voyage.

A one-trip container has been shipped loaded from Asia to Europe once after production. Technically as good as new, paintwork without prior damage, floors unused. If the container will be on display or converted, this is the best choice.

Suitable for

  • Conversion into an office, living space or sales area
  • Prominent placement on company premises
  • Long-term use without renovation

Cargo-worthy (CW)

Seaworthy, with a valid CSC plate.

Used, but rated seaworthy by a surveyor. Signs of use and rust spots are normal; the structure has been inspected. Only this grade may still be used for international sea transport.

Suitable for

  • International transport by ship
  • Storage with high demands on watertightness
  • Resale within the transport industry

Wind and watertight (WWT)

Watertight, but no longer certified for sea transport.

The container keeps out wind and rain, but the CSC plate has expired or was not renewed. For stationary storage on land this makes no difference, and it accounts for the lower price. Rust and dents on the outer skin are part of it.

Suitable for

  • Stationary storage on your own premises
  • Site storage and tool containers
  • Cost-conscious long-term solutions on land

Used / as-is

Sold in the condition found.

Visible damage, leaks or a need for repairs are possible and reflected in the price. Useful if you plan to convert or dismantle it anyway, or use it as a source of materials. We state the defects before purchase.

Suitable for

  • Conversion projects with your own workshop
  • Material recovery and dismantling
  • Secondary storage purposes

Frequently asked

Do I really need cargo-worthy?

Only if the container is going back on a ship. If it stays on land permanently, the CSC plate brings no practical benefit but costs extra.

Is rust a defect?

Surface rust is part of every used container and does not affect its function. What matters is whether the material has rusted through. That is exactly what we check before delivery.

Why does a used container sometimes smell?

Residual odours come from previous cargoes or from the treatment of the wooden floor. This practically never occurs with one-trip containers; with older ones it can be fixed by airing and a new floor coating.
