Preparing the standing area

Most failed deliveries are not down to the container but to the ground. Five steps to have the area ready before delivery day.

  1. 1

    Choose the location

Pick an area with a straight truck approach and enough working space all around the container. The ground should slope slightly away from the building so that rainwater drains off and does not collect under the container.

  2. 2

    Clear and compact the area

Remove vegetation, topsoil and roots until you reach load-bearing ground. Compact the soil with a vibrating plate and level it with a fall of around two per cent.

  3. 3

    Create a load-bearing base

The load must be carried safely under the four corner castings. Compacted gravel (at least about 20 cm), concrete slabs or strip foundations are sufficient; a continuous base slab is not necessary.

  4. 4

    Level the base

All four corner castings must rest at the same height. Check with a spirit level and straightedge: if the container stands at an angle, the frame distorts permanently and the doors jam.

  5. 5

    Check the clearance

When setting down by crane, around six metres of clear height above the standing area are needed, with no overhead lines, canopies or branches within the swing range. Let us know about tight spots in advance and we will choose the right vehicle.

Frequently asked

Is natural ground or lawn enough?

Usually not. A container transfers its load at four corner points; unpaved ground sinks there, and the container is standing at an angle after the first rain.

How much space do I need to plan for?

The container footprint plus working space all around for levelling, and a straight approach in line with the standing area for the delivery vehicle.

Does the whole area need to be paved?

No. Load-bearing and level under the four corner castings is enough. Pad foundations or concrete slabs at the corners serve the purpose just as well as a continuous slab.
